Working with 72 Hours Urban Action - Organizing International Real-time Architecture Competitions
How’s the Water - Urban intervention in Birzabuggia, Malta. 2017
As part of an ongoing collaboration between Valetta Culture Clusture and 72 HUA, I was invited to participate in a 72 hour design-build challenge in Birzabbuga, Malta.
In a team of 12 multi-disciplinary participants, half of them local, we designed and built an intervention in a dull, dark, passage-way leading to the beach.
Realizing that the passage-way is actually an historic drainage canal, we decided to make it into an out of scale and surreal valley.

With Malta being an island not rich with wood but full of stone and limestone buildings, we chose limestone as the main material and metal which is very common in the area. Because no anchoring to ground or walls was allowed, we experimented with a modern interpretation to agricultural load-bearing walls. We created empty “pools” filled with gravel and thus self-supported.

A flying alien boat was hung between 3 posts, only supported by the weight of the gravel sitting on their wide base.

The Fishermen’s Toolbox - Urban intervention in Birzabuggia, Malta. 2018
As part of a 2nd collaboration between Valetta Culture Clusture and 72 HUA, I was invited to participate in a 72 hour design- build challenge in Birzabbuga, Malta.
In a team of 12 multi-disciplinary participants, half of them local, we designed and built 3 installations for the local fishermen’s club boat parking area.
The Tool Box installation is an old car trailer transformed into an vintage tool box shaped creature. It has 6 lockers for tools, as the fishermen fix their boats there, a foldable work table and a bar for events and casual hangouts.
